Requirements to Access ARCC Resources

In order to use any of ARCC's resources, there are two (2) primary prerequisites:

  1. You MUST have a person desginated to serve as the Principal Investigator (PI)
  2. The PI MUST then request, or already be associated with, an ARCC project
    • Within the ARCC ecosystem, a project could mean a number of different things. It could be a HPC project account, a storage allocation, a S3 bucket, or something else entirely depending on the resource/service
    • Without an associated project, researcher accounts will not be created to access any ARCC resource(s)

Principal Investigators

A Principal Investigator (PI) is the lead researcher responsible for scientific, technical, and administrative management of a project. In ARCC, PIs have a number of responsibilities associated with their projects.

Role & Responsibilities

ARCC Project PIs are responsibile for the administration and managment of their project(s). Meaning, any changes to the project must be requested from the PI. Here are a few examples of common project changes:

  • New Project Creation - Any new project on ARCC resources must be requested by the PI.
  • User Account Creation & Project Access - Anyone working with a PI on a project, will need to have their account requested by the associated project PI. General users are not allowed to request their own account or access to a PI's project on their own.
  • Quota Increases - There are default quota's on ARCC resources (generally storage or computing hours, but could mean something else depending on the resource). Any alteration of these quotas must be requested by the PI.
  • Billing Contact(s): Some ARCC resources require a form of payment. The PI is responsibile for providing who ARCC should contact for billing inquiries.
  • Ensure Compliance of ARCC Policies: The ARCC policies are published on the ARCC website. If ARCC finds any violation of these policies, the PI will be contacted to take corrective action(s).
  • Accept ARCC Communications and Forward to Project Members as Appropriate: All PIs are required to be a memeber of the arcc-announce listserv. While anyone can sign up, a PI is responsible for distributing any announcements ARCC may make to their collaborators.

PI Eligibility

PI Eligibility is detailed on the ARCC Website under Policies.

Faculty & Staff PIs

Eligibile Principal Investigators are anyone at the University of Wyoming who is a current faculty member with an extended-term position or Research focused staff (i.e. Research Scientists). However, this faculty member position designation does not extend to Adjunct nor to Emeritus Faculty.

Graduate Student PIs

University of Wyoming Graduate Students may also serve as the PI of their own projects, but in a limited capacity. Here are the limitations of projects with Graduate Student PIs:

  • All Graduate level project requests are subject to ARCC leadership approval.
  • Storage quotas will be 50% of the storage space associated with faculty PI projects.
  • Limited computational hours.
  • Graduate Students will not be allowed to request another user's account creation or access to their project.

Account Creations

If you qualify as a PI, and you need to request a new project, please include the user accounts you want created and added to or project on the New project Request Form. If you already have a project and need to add or remove user accounts from your project, please use the Request Project Change(s) Form.

Requests to be added to a Project

Any user that requests for their account to be created and added to their PI's project will not be granted until ARCC receives written confirmation from the PI.

Account Types

There are three primary account types used on ARCC Services. These vary dependent upon the ARCC resources in which access is granted, and UWYO affiliation:

1. UWYO Accounts

  1. Standard accounts created upon hire, Academic Affairs appointment, or admission to UWyo
  2. 8 characters in length, and used to access various UW related resources including UW e-mail, UW lab
  3. computers, wyoweb, HCM, data storage, ARCC HPC resources, UW VPN, and many other UWYO technical services.
  4. UWYO account access and general access troubleshooting should be referred to UW Information Technology.
  5. Access specific to ARCC resources should be referred to UW ARCC

These accounts can be granted access to any and all ARCC resources as long as that access is approved by the associated project PI.

2. ARCC-Only Accounts

ARCC-Only accounts are created by ARCC for non-UWYO users and will only allow the user to log into our HPC resources (such as GannettPeak or Medicinebow).

  1. These are created by ARCC for non-UWYO users.
  2. They only allow the account user access to ARCC HPC resources (such as GannettPeak or MedicineBow).
  3. They do not have uwyo-email access, and the username is standardized using: firstnamelastname (Example: Johnathan Smith would be johnathansmith).

Note

These accounts may only be granted access to projects on ARCC HPCs (such as MedicineBow or GannettPeak ), and some specialty services such as Gitlab.

They also do not work with some services such as Globus

3. External Collaborator Accounts

Also known as Research Collaborator Accounts. Like UWYO accounts, these are created by UWYO Information Technology for non-UWYO users at a project PI's request to access specific resources. UWYO PI's may request collaborator accounts here

  1. Must be set up through https://wyosecure.uwyo.edu for 2 factor authentication, and must go through UWYO IT to request password resets or authentication changes.
  2. External users accessing arcc-resources should login using the same method(s) and portal(s) as UWYO Accounts.
  3. External users needing ARCC resource access outside of ARCC HPC systems or Gitlab must request an exco account through UWYO IT.
  4. With the release of ARCC-Only accounts, external collaborator accounts are now not typically necessary except for when researchers need to grant UW VPN, and SMB access of Alcova allocation(s) or other specialized research data storage to a non-UW affiliated individual.

If the collaborator has access to Globus, it's recommended to share Alcova data using Globus instead. |
