Interactive Applications

Both the MedicineBow and AI4WY HPC systems use Open OnDemand to run interactive jobs with graphical applications. Whether that maybe a Graphical User Interface (GUI) such as MatLab or Jupyter Notebooks or a Desktop view, either help to lower the barrier some users' experience from command-line only use.

Applications Available

The available applications vary for each cluster, but there are a few that apply to both MedicineBow and AI4WY.

JupyterLab

JupyterLab allows users to create their own kernels and run several different notebooks, whether that be a Python, or R kernel or something else. Check out ARCC's tutorials on Jupyter with OnDemand

Interactive Desktop

This provide a desktop interface to compute nodes on the HPC systems. It includes most things that you would imagine a desktop to have, including a Web Browser, Terminal application, File Browser, etc.

Files

Using this application allows users to browse and use the files over a web browser instead of a typical command-line or text editor interface.

Jobs

This application monitors queued and on-going jobs on the HPC system.

Terminal

This application give command-line access to the cluster without the need to leave the web browser.

Accessibility and Convienent Features

As of the May 2026 maintenance period, Open OnDemand has been upgraded to version 4.2.2. This version features Interactive Applications now opening in the same browser tap that users click from instead of opening in a new tab in previous versions. This allows for a more accessible experience.

Also for convience, recently used applications remember the requested features from the last time they were used. For example, if the last Jupyter Notebook that was used, requested a GPU. The next time you click on the Jupyter Notebook application in the recently used section, instead of getting a form to request features, the notebook will start with one already requested.
